The American Booksellers Association will take over management of Independent Bookstore Day, an annual event to encourage people to shop at independently owned stores.
Independent Bookstore Day was launched in 2014 by the Southern California Independent Booksellers Association and 95 California booksellers to promote the industry, according to the news site Vox. The event was expanded to include independent bookstores nationwide in 2015. It is held on the last Saturday of April. http://bit.ly/30FV0EC
In a statement, ABA said it is taking over management starting in 2020 because the event has grown considerably since it launched. Current Independent Bookstore Day Program Director Samantha Schoech will remain in her position and work closely with ABA on planning and promoting the event.
ABA also is planning to hold a series of workshops at its fall regional trade shows to help booksellers capitalize on the event.
